Chippendale Mahogany Slant Lid Desk

A  RARE  SOUTHERN  FORMAL  HUNTBOARD/SIDEBOARD.  middle Atlantic  states,  circa  1790  -  1810.
       A RARE Southern Inlaid Mahogany Huntboard/Sideboard, constructed with the most desirable narrow proportions.---Only 54" wide.  
     The 'bellflower' inlay in the legs, the highly-figured 'book matched' flame mahogany veneers in the face of the cupboard doors, the use of above average Caribbean mahogany in the single piece top board, along with the details of construction, provides evidence that this huntboard/sideboard was made for a knowledgeable customer living back in the early part of the 19th century.
     This huntboard/sideboard is in excellent original condition, with an old varnish finish.
     A most desirable early huntboard/sideboard made for the most discriminating collector.

 

 

Pennsylvania Chippendale Cherry Chest of Drawers

 

AMERICAN FEDERAL PENNYSLYVANIA CHERRY CORNER CUPBOARD.  Circa late 18th century.

A two piece corner cupboard with an upper section with glazed doors, over a cupboard with a single paneled door. A cupboard with choice narrow proportions.
   
The unusual window mullions with the arched curved strips in the upper section of this single glazed door shows excellent proportion and design. The other door mullions line up perfectly to match the edges of the interior shelves. The case rests on a plinth form base.

The back boards are original and match the age and construction of the front and interior boards.

 

NEW ENGLAND CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY CHEST OF DRAWERS.
Circa 1785

     Having a rectangular top with carved  molded edges, and outset blocked ends, over a conforming case, with a central drawer with a carved fan flanked by short drawers over four graduated drawers. Brass Chippendale handles, flanked by flat fluted columns. This all raised on a molded base on tapered and dovetailed bracket feet.

Baltimore Chippendale Cherry Corner Cupboard
, circa 1765-1785. An outstanding shell dome cupboard, with scalloped shaped shelves, and stopped fluted pilasters. The arched door panels & early Chinese influenced window mullions, together with the scalloped shaped interior shelves shows this to be one of the rarest and best examples of American corner cupboards.---Quite possibly one of the earliest Maryland corner cupboards known. The intricacy of the design of the door mullions, together with the arched shape of the doors, the shape of the central carved keystone and fluted pilasters give testament that this cupboard was made by an exceptional and highly trained craftsman for a client of stature, position, and wealth A rare corner cupboard, made in the best of 18th century Baltimore traditions. This cupboard has a note pasted inside that states that the previous owner purchased this cupboard back in 1957 from one of  Americas' leading antiques dealer: Phillip Bradley, of Penna.

 RARE Federal Brandy Board (Huntboard), Southern, circa 1800. Serpentine shaped  front of mahogany & mahogany veneers ,with string inlay on the drawer and doors,  with quarter fan inlays on the doors. This all resting on tall tappered Hepplewhite legs, with satinwood banded cuffs. Old brasses, but not original. In as found, estate condition.

CHIPPENDALE WALNUT CORNER CUPBOARD, POSSIBLY VIRGINIA,   circa 1785
In two parts, the upper section with scrolled crest and carved rosettes centering an urn-turned finial above a pair of glazed doors opening to three scalloped shelves; the lower section with a pair of paneled doors above a shaped bracket base.
 Height 94 inches, width 46 inches, depth 20 inches

George III Inlaid Work Table, circa 1790

 

A  RARE  GEORGE  III  CARVED  MAHOGANY  CENTER / TEA  TABLE,     circa 1790 .

The molded and shaped one-board top of exotic grained Santo Doming mahogany, with elaborately carved gaddroon edge, above a carved scrolled frieze, raised on elaborately carved legs headed by lions mask carving on the knees, ending in gracefully carved and executed claw and ball feet. In excellent original condition with no repairs or restorations.
Meas:  H - 28 " ,  L - 37 " ,  D - 22.5 "
    This table is designed and executed in the manner of the world famous cabinetmakers of Robert and James Adams, working in London, circa 1790.

 

Important Charleston Inlaid Mahogany Pembroke Table, with Rare 'Husk' Inlay. circa 1790

A masterpiece of design, craftsmanship, and choice of woods. The use of dense mahogany here, along with cypress and yellow pine woods gives testimony to this table being made in Charleston, S.C. Ex collection:   F. Horton     MEDSA . note: Shown in Helen Comstock's  (American Furniture,  fig. 576) Meas:  28 1/2"  x  21 1/2" (closed), opens to 45"  x  34". This identical 'Husk' inlay can also be seen on a heavily inlaid Charleston sideboard shown here in our website

With a rectangular molded and shaped dish top and a central drawer, supported by curved cabriole legs terminating in trifed feet.

Baltimore Hepplewhite Inlaid Mahogany Sideboard, c. 1790-1800.
A rectangular top with ovolo cut corners, over a case with a double silverware drawer flanked on either side by single drawers, this all over double cupboard doors, flanked on one side by a cupboard door, and on the opposite side by a deep drawer. This all supported by square tapering legs, terminating in inlaid cuffs. An above average example of work being done in the Federal time period in Baltimore in the late 18th century. This Baltimore Sideboard is richly veneered on the drawer and cupboard faces with the finest quality exotic crotch-grained Santo Domingo mahogany, which is all outlined with detailed checkerd and line inlay. In excellent original condition. 


Baltimore Hepplewhite Inlaid Mahogany Sideboard, c. 1795-1800.
A rectangular top with ovolo cut corners, over a case with a single silverware drawer, this all over double cupboard doors, flanked on either side by cupboard doors on. This all supported by square tapering legs.
An above average example of work being done in the Federal time period in Baltimore in the late 18th century. This Baltimore Sideboard is richly veneered on the drawer and cupboard faces with the finest quality exotic crotch-grained Santo Domingo mahogany, which is all outlined with exquisite floral and line inlay.

The delicate balance of the rectangular shaped top with ovolo cut corners over a concave and serpentine shaped lower cupboard section, suggests that this piece was made by a master craftsman. The use of the floral and fine circular line inlay in the drawer fronts gives further reference for this sideboard being made in Baltimore, by a master craftsman, and for a wealthy client.

FEDERAL MAHOGANY and BIRD'S-EYE MAPLE WORK TABLE.
New England, circa 1800-1810. A fine Federal Mahogany work table, with bird's-eye maple drawer fronts and original lion's head pulls. The rectangular top with outset rounded corners above a case with two drawers and a bag slide drawer (bag not fitted), each centering a veneer panel of bird's-eye maple. The two (2) top drawers fitted with original lion's head pulls.....The upper drawer has a fitted interior with small dividers. This is all flanked by turned stiles continuing to reeded legs, terminating in brass casters.

 

Federal Mahogany & Birds-Eye Maple Veneer Chest-of-Drawers, Massachussetts, c. 1825.

The rectangular shaped top with outset rounded corners above a conforming case of four (4) graduated drawers with birds-eye maple veneered fronts and banded with cross-cut mahogany, flanked by reeded columns, resting on turned feet.

 



GEORGE III FIGURED MAPLE WORK TABLE, ENGLAND circa 1810
A fine Georgian Figured Maple Work Table. The rectangular top with cut corners is veneered with choice birds eye maple, this is edge banded with a delicate ebony and satinwood diamond inlay. The drawer front is veneered with bird's-eye maple and cross banded with intricate ebony and satinwood inlay. This all above a bag slide drawer (bag not fitted). This all resting on extremely delicate legs made of highly figured tiger maple.

George II Burl Walnut and Carved Gilt Mirror,  circa 1730-1750.
The pediment frieze with a basket of flowers and swags is carefully balanced and beautifully executed. The mottled burl walnut veneer is a standard treatment for architectural mirrors of this time period. Excellent original condition, with some minor gesso loss.   



George II Carved and Gilt Mirror, with original swing candle or sconce arms, circa 1710-1720.
The simple gilded pine frame sets off  the shallow restrained carving and, in the lower crest, reserves for the original early 18 th century brass candle arms. Excellent original condition.

George III Ebony Inlaid Sideboard of highly figured Mahogany. Circa 1800. The rectangular shaped top with convex shaped ends and a concave shaped central section is surmounted with a back splash board. This back splash board, being 12" deep, has two (2) offset sliding doors which open to expose a storage compartment along the entire width of this ebony inlaid back splash board. The crossbanded top is above a center concave section containing a double drawer, flanked on one side with a cupboard door and the other side a cellarette drawer---all richly inlaid with ebony. This is all raised on square tapered legs, with ebony inlay, terminating in spade shaped feet. Meas.: 74" - W, 26 3/4" - D, 43 1/2" - H (top of splash board).

Hepplewhite Mahogany Sheraton Bow-Front Chest. Mass. (poss. Salem) circa 1815-25 . An exceptional bowed front chest in mahogany with unparalleled 'crotch' mahogany veneers and banded with cross grain mahogany. The oblong top with outset rounded corners, three-quarter turned reeded columns, and inlay edge, over four dovetailed and cockbeaded drawers all resting on turned tapering legs. The drawer fronts are veneered with highly-exotic crotch grain mahogany and banded with rosewood. The choice use of spectacular mahogany veneer used on the drawer fronts is most striking and gives testament to this chest being made by a most experienced and knowledgeable 'master' craftsman. The feet and oval brass pulls (with urns & flowers) are original. Minor old restoration to two (2) legs and to bottom side trim moulding.

 

 

CARVED CHIPPENDALE CHERRY TALL CHEST, New England, circa late 18th century. In cherry with pine secondary wood. Molded cornice. Three small drawers over five full-width drawers. Original oval brasses. Some restoration to feet.

Regency Sideboard in the Adams manner, first quarter 19th century.
A mahogany sideboard, a tour de force in cabinetmaking, with generous amounts of figured inlays, and further outlined with cross banded satinwood inlays on every flat surface. The entire front of this sideboard is highly decorated with elaborate inlays and highly figured and matching 'branch-grained' mahogany veneers. The top portion having a central mirror, flanked on either side by glazed cabinets. This all resting on a richly inlaid table top with the border outlined in cross banded satinwood and with a central satinwood inlay oval medallion. This over a central long drawer which is flanked by drawers on either side. This all rests on pedestals on either side, with richly inlaid figured mahogany panels in the Adams manner. The one pedestal contains slide out drawers and the other, a shelf and a wine/bottle drawer. Retains the original finish.

A NARROW American Mahogany Chippendale Chest, c. 1785.
An exquisite chest displaying exceptional quality and proportions of similar pieces attributed to the finest cabinetmakers working in and around Philadelphia in the late 18th century.  The waist measurement of this chest is only 29 1/2" . Truly a superb example of furniture made during this American time period.  In general good condition with an old faded surface and original brasses. Feet are original, glue blocks are replaced. Meas: 29 1/2" W, 33" H, 20" D

 

A RARE Southern Inlaid Walnut Huntboard (Virginia or Maryland), circa 1790-1810.
A most desirable and rare inlaid and serpentine fronted huntboard (or 'slab' board). This walnut and walnut veneer Serpentine Hepplewhite Huntboard with a back 'splash' board and a single one (1) piece top has near 'perfect' proportions. The back splash board as well as the drawer faces are veneered with highly figured American 'branch-grained' walnut. These drawer fronts, as well as the legs, are outlined with a simple string inlay........Showing an 'original' surface with replaced, but appropriate brasses. Meas: 41" - H, 54" - W, 24 1/2" - D

 

HEPPLEWHITE  BOWED-FRONT AMERICAN SIDEBOARD 19th Century in mahogany. Maryland origin. Seven drawers. Central bowed door. Line inlay. Spade feet. Height 37". Length 63 1/2". Depth 31".

 

 

Set of 4 Fine French Empire Side Chairs

Set of four (4) Fine French Empire side chairs, each in fine mahogany and set with ormolu mounts. All chairs have gilt bronze winged lion bronze mounts on legs with paw feet. French, probably second half 19th century. Side chairs meas: 37-1/2 x 22-1/2 x 24 in.



PEAT BUCKETS - A Rare Pair of Irish Mahogany and Brass Bound Peat Buckets. Early 19th century.
A pair of large buckets of generous proportions, original lead-lined interiors, with a carved spiral body accented with a central carved shell on the front and back, mounted with brass ring bands at the top and bottom, together with brass ring carrying handles on the sides....Excellent original condition.

GEORGE III Inlaid Mahogany Serpentine Sideboard. England, Circa 1790

The serpentine shaped top of exotic 'plum pudding' mahogany, with a satinwood inlay edge, resting over a conforming case with a double wide central drawer, with a 'cellarette' drawer to the right, and two (2) drawers on the left. This all rests on square tapering legs, which terminate in inlaid cuffs. Excellent Condition. Brasses are old replacements.
Meas.: 72' W, 39" H, 26.5" D

George II Burl Walnut Card Table, circa 1730. A fine burl walnut card table with rare concertina-action. The hinged top with rounded corners opening to an embroidered playing surface depicting various playing cards with recessed money wells ('loo' chip pockets) above a plain frieze, raised on cabriole legs carved at the knees with fully developed acanthus leaves and terminating in ball and claw feet.

The serpentine shaped top above a conforming case over an apron with a single drawer, resting on square tapering, fluted, and chamfered legs, terminating in Marlbourgh shaped feet.

The demi-lune hinged top above a conforming apron, with inlay skirt, on square tapering legs inlaid with typical Baltimore bellflower, terminating in 'spade' shaped feet.

 

An Oversized Carved Chippendale Pine Step Back Cupboard, Pennslvania, late 18th Century.

In two parts, the upper section with a carved moulding over a pair of glazed mullion doors centering a glazed panel, opening to expose shelves with spoon slots, plate racks, and an open upper back shelf for the storage of large platters. The lower section with two drawers and cupboard doors, on bracket feet.

A Fine and Rare Hepplewhite Style Inlaid Mahogany Dining Table of Unusual Over-Size Dimensions, c. mid-19th Century.

A two part table, with six (6) leaves, which closes down to a perfect round table (72" diameter), and opens up to over 14 Ft. with the addition of all of its' 16" wide leaves. -----The top of highly-figured mahogany is multiple banded on its outside edge with multiple banding combinations of Rosewood, Satinwood, and cross-banded Mahogany; this over a heavily inlaid apron of crotch-mnahogany resting on square tapering legs, also heavily inlaid, terminating in 'spade-shaped' feet.
